Description
What is a fuel pump?
Because the fuel tank is located on the opposite end of the car
from the engine, a fuel pump is required to draw the gas toward the
engine. There are two kinds: mechanical, which were used in
carbureted cars, and electric, which is used in cars with
electronic fuel injection.
A carburetor is a fuel delivery mechanism that makes use of the
simple principle of vacuum in order to deliver fuel to the engine.
The same vacuum that draws the air-fuel mixture into the engine
also draws fuel along the lines toward the engine.
However, additional help is necessary, so carbureted engines have a
mechanical fuel pump. This runs off of the engine's rotation; as a
result, in a carbureted car, it is located alongside the engine.
How does the fuel system work in a diesel engine?
The fuel injection pump is fed with fuel in abundance. The excess
fuel is by-passed to the intake side of the fuel transfer pump
through a relief valve. The main components of the fuel system in
diesel engine are:

Filtering petrol and air
Both petrol and air are filtered before passing into the
carburettor.
The petrol filter may be a replaceable paper one inside a plastic
housing in the fuel line . A pump may include a wire or plastic
gauze filter, and sometimes a bowl to catch sediment .
The air cleaner is a box fitted over the carburettor air intake,
usually containing a replaceable paper-filter element.

Most mechanical and electrical systems pump fuel only when the
carburettor needs it. An alternative system has a complete circuit
of pipes, from the tank to the carburettor and back again. The pump
sends petrol continuously round this circuit, from which the
carburettor draws petrol as it needs it
